Synopsis:

Celebrate the centenary of the Roaring Twenties with an interdisciplinary exploration of the Art, Design, Music, Literature, Fashion and the lives of the era's protagonists.

From Harlem's renaissance of black culture to the French Riveria playground of wealthy socialites, and inspiration for artists like Matisse and Cocteau, writers Hemingway and the Fitzgeralds - to the 'new woman' embodied by Tamara de Lempicka and Coco Chanel.

From Harlem’s renaissance of Black Culture, through Gershwin’s 1924 ‘Rhapsody in Blue’, Edward Hopper’s City-Scapes, Scheeler’s Precision and Art Deco, see how the era played out in the cityscape.

12.00 Lecture 2: Modern Neurotic Girls

The Jazz Age celebrated the rise of the Flappers and the ‘New Woman’ embodied by Tamara de Lempicka and Coco Chanel. Discover how the fashion designers, artists and writers of the period heralded the reinvention of gender roles.

14.15 Lecture 3: Tales of The Jazz Age

For some, the Jazz Age was created by the Americans, Gerald and Sarah Murphy on the French Riviera, a playground for wealthy socialites and the inspiration for artists such as Picasso and Cocteau and writers like Hemingway and the Fitzgeralds. Explore their masterpieces and their sometimes scandalous relationships.
